Bedding off to solid start in High Point

Market has expanded exhibitor lineup

David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 18, 2010

AT THE MARKET — Buoyed by an expanded lineup of mattress exhibitors, the bedding market is off to a solid start here.
Serta showroomSerta’s Bob Sherman peers through yellow construction tape at Serta, part of that producer’s “under construction” theme at its new IHFC showroom.

Spirits were high in mattress showrooms large and small as improving business conditions have put bedding producers and retailers in more upbeat moods. The industry is expected to shake off two years of sales declines this year and post healthy gains.

New exhibitors say they are expecting a strong show.

"There is a greater optimism than we've seen in the last 18 months," said Todd Youngblood, president of Chili Technology, a supplier of mattress temperature regulation systems making its first High Point showing in the Knickerbocker showroom. "We expect the higher end of the market to start coming back."

Other new High Point bedding exhibitors include Jamison Bedding, Park Place and Klaussner Memory Foam Bedding. They join more than two dozen other bedding producers already established here.

But it's not just the new bedding kids on the block who are optimistic.

"There's a good vibe at this market — vibrant buzz," said Gerry Borreggine, president of Therapedic, a longtime High Point exhibitor, which is showing a new encased coil bedding line here called Therawrap.

"It's always great when expectations start to merge with reality," added Ron Passaglia, president of Restonic. "We started to see a positive increase in March and have every reason to believe that our expectations for this market will be fulfilled. And that would give us one of our best April markets here in recent years."

Restonic got off a strong start, seeing a number of major target accounts who were impressed with the company's revamped ComfortCare line, Passaglia said.

Serta is enjoying a strong year and believes the bedding comeback will continue to gain strength throughout the year, said Bob Sherman, president. Serta, showing in a new IHFC showroom with an "under construction" theme, has brought plenty of new products here to spark buyers' interest. The company has added new high-end models to its Trump Home line, has a new Smart Support line of gel-cushioned beds retailing from $1,299 to $2,999, and has a full offering of Nickelodeon-themed kids beds.
