Ikea set to build its largest Canadian store in Ottawa

OTTAWA —
Ikea Canada will begin building its largest Canadian store in this city's Pinecrest Mall this month and hopes to have it open by the fall of 2011. It will replace the existing Ottawa store in the same shopping center.
The Sweden-based home furnishings retail giant said the new 398,000-square-foot store will better serve the needs of the Ottawa market.
“Being a single-store market, we have recognized the need to grow our business in Ottawa to accommodate our customers,” Kerri Molinaro, president of the Burlington, Ontario-based Ikea Canada, said in a statement. “The new store will be a completely different shopping experience to our customers in Ottawa that will offer more inspirational room settings, our full range of Ikea products, a large-scale restaurant and more in-store services.”
IKEA said that in addition to stocking its core lineup of about 9,500 exclusively designed products, the new Ottawa store will feature 50 room settings, a children's play area and a 640-seat restaurant.
Its design will incorporate sustainable and environmentally friendly features including high efficiency heating and cooling systems, water conservation plumbing fixtures, and skylights that will allow for more natural light and reduce the need for electric lighting.
Ikea also is in the midst of building a store in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Once that store is open, probably in early 2012, the retailer will have 12 stores in Canada.
