ROSLYN, N.Y. —
Industry veteran Arthur Koch, called a “super salesman” and “legend” by his friends, died Wednesday night. He was 88.
Koch worked in the furniture industry for some 60 years, primarily as a sales representative in New York but also as the owner of the First Rapids furniture store in the New York area. Among the lines he represented for the longest period of time was Jonathan Louis.
“Artie was a legend. He was a true Damon Runyon character — totally unique. When you met him, you never forgot him,” said longtime friend Harley Greenfield, chairman and CEO of Woodbury, N.Y.-based Jennifer Convertibles.
Greenfield estimated Koch had clocked more than 120 High Point markets. “I don't think he ever missed one,” he said. Koch most recently attended the winter Las Vegas Market.
“Eighty-eight years old and making your last market Vegas?” Greenfield said. “That's sums it all up. Artie couldn't have scripted it any better.”
Julius Feinblum, president of Julius M. Feinblum Real Estate in Plainview, N.Y., said Koch was “a real super salesman who knew the furniture industry inside out.
“He was the epitome of a furniture rep till the day he passed away — active, attended all markets including Vegas, a New York legend and one of the finest furniture reps in the industry,” he said.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, a daughter and two grandchildren.
