HIGH POINT — Former Sam Moore CEO John Boardman has a new chair from his former company - and a special one at that.
In celebration of Sam Moore's 70th anniversary, employees and friends of the company signed a linen-covered rendition of the company's first chair and presented it to Boardman and his wife, Marilyn, at the just-ended High Point Market.
Boardman, who retired in 2000 after 43 years, took a long look at the chair and said, "I remember a lot of these people."
He said he doesn't have a Sam Moore chair in his home, but noted that his daughters have some and said the company has been the source of a number of wedding gifts.
Boardman said that seven decades ago, the original design wholesaled for $22.99 and retailed for $39.95.
A second identical chair in the showroom was signed during market by Sam Moore dealers and company sales representatives. That chair will be placed in the cafeteria of the company's Virginia plant and will be used in celebrations this summer.
The presentation was held before a small group that included several of the company's executives. A commemorative plaque was presented by Alan Cole, president and CEO of Hooker Upholstery, along with a letter of appreciation lauding Boardman for his work. Sam Moore is a division of Hooker Furniture.
"Your years of leadership at Sam Moore have been a vital link to its founder and its history," the letter said in part. "Your service to our company and the entire industry is worthy of honor and recognition in this year of celebration."
