Man survives tornado in La-Z-Boy recliner
Company gives him $1,000 to help replace other furniture

LAFAYETTE, Tenn. — When a tornado hit John Spencer’s home here, he made it safely though the storm — sitting on his La-Z-Boy recliner.
“The wind tried to pull me out of the recliner, but I (thought) no, I’m just going to sit back and relax a little bit — and then it was over,” said Spencer. “I lost everything except my chair, and I guess I happened to be in the right spot at the right time.”
Hundreds of other Macon County residents lost their homes in a massive tornado outbreak that swept across the southern states Feb. 5. When rescue workers arrived at Spencer’s house two hours after the twister hit, they found the home and nearly all his belongings destroyed. But Spencer and his recliner made it through without a scratch.
He’s now staying with his daughter and is looking for a new place to live. La-Z-Boy has given him a $1,000 gift certificate that he can use on new La-Z-Boy furniture to match his “lucky” recliner.
