Payne teaming with Lazar for upholstery group
By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, April 20, 2008
Los Angeles — Designer Michael Payne, best known for his HGTV program "Designing for the Sexes," will introduce an upholstered furniture collection for contemporary specialist Lazar Furniture Inds. at the October market here.
The launch include six or seven pieces that will cover the basics from a true chaise to a sectional. It will be the first upholstery line for the seasoned designer, who recently finished his contract with Powell Co., for which he designed case goods and other products.
"It's particularly exciting for me," said Payne, who often designed products for his long-running series that featured couples who couldn't agree on what their living areas should look and feel like.
"You know, a lot of times I just couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so I would tell them, 'I'll just go back and design something just for you,'" he said. "I welcome the chance."
He added that he also expects to have other licensees on board by the fall market and to have a Michael Payne Home collection. He declined to provide details but said, "Are other companies being wooed? Yes." He recently partnered with licensing agency LAN Partners in Chicago.
Lazar, which has factories in Los Angeles and in Siler City, N.C., is known for contemporary and transitional styles with an urban, hip design. Payne said he will continue that direction but will make the product different by adding his own touch.
Payne said he sees no end to the growing popularity of contemporary.
