Leggett introduces advanced innerspring system

VertiCoil said to offer premium performance, value price

David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 23, 2008

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Components major Leggett & Platt has introduced what it is billing as the latest advance in sleep technology: A newly engineered innerspring coil that takes dead aim at the most popular innerspring in the world.

L&P says its new VertiCoil, invented at the company’s Idea Center here, offers premium, high performance at a value price point. It is priced to compete with the Bonnell coil, a mainstay of bedding lines around the world.

The producer is wrapping a comprehensive marketing program around its new coil, which it calls “the new shape of comfort.” The offset coil provides improved deflection that reduces muscle tension, the company says.

“Your body will find a more comfortable sleep position on VertiCoil, relaxing naturally, so you wake invigorated — a new you,” L&P says in a consumer brochure touting the coil.

L&P officials said that with VertiCoil they are making a leadership statement in sleep technology.

“Companies try to position innersprings as outdated, but this is the most recent innovation in bedding technology,” said Mark Quinn, group executive vice president of sales and marketing in L&P’s bedding division. “VertiCoil is the first helically tied, purpose-built innerspring introduced in more than a decade.”

VertiCoil was first introduced by Sealy in Canada, Quinn said. L&P is now making the unit available to bedding producers throughout the United States.

To create the patented wire design, Leggett developed machines designed only to produce VertiCoil units. The machines, built from scratch, feature Swiss-engineered, computerized machinery that is the most advanced wire forming device in the world, according to L&P.

In addition to creating proprietary software and machinery, Leggett also re-engineered the wire itself.

“This new process produces a thinner, lighter and stronger coil that maintains complete innerspring integrity,” said Tom Wells Jr., vice president of research and development for L&P’s bedding division. “Engineering the desired coil height while maintaining the firmness level needed was a delicate balancing act.”

VertiCoil also makes more efficient use of wire than Bonnell coils, according to L&P officials. “Using less steel is a good thing,” Quinn said.

The shape of VertiCoil creates a comfortable sleep surface that firms and responds to the body as weight is applied, according to the company. L&P says it offers “Active Support Technology” that reacts immediately to natural sleep movements, adjusting itself for proper spinal alignment and healthier, more restful sleep.

The marketing support for VertiCoil represents a new emphasis for L&P. To assist smaller to mid-sized bedding producers in telling the VertiCoil story on retail sales floors, L&P created a customizable, turnkey marketing program, with key materials on a CD. The program includes counter cards, direct mailers, consumer brochures and product sales sheets.

L&P introduced VertiCoil and its marketing materials at the recent International Sleep Products Assn. Expo in Baltimore. The response from the industry has been strong, the company said.

“VertiCoil is the culmination of Leggett’s historical leadership in wire forming technologies,” Wells said. “It is emblematic of the cross-functional partnership between our product development, mechanical and electrical engineering, machinery development and marketing divisions.”
