Houjie, China — The next big stage of furniture-related development is about to occur in this section of Dongguan.
During the 19th International Famous Furniture Fair, local government officials announced a planned 2.5 million-square-foot development anchored by furniture showrooms.
Located just outside the Guangdong Modern International Exhibition Center in Houjie, the Xingye International Furnishings City will include a mix of furniture showrooms that will be open to the trade during the March and September furniture show.
The rest of the year, they will be open to the public as retail space.
The second phase of the project will include an undetermined amount of space for a designers club, a research center, an information center and a warehouse and logistics center.
Details were not available on how much space the showrooms would occupy. An artist's rendering shows four large buildings surrounded by landscaping, ponds and waterways.
The first phase of the Xingye International Furnishings City is planned to open in September 2009.
Home to some 1,300 furniture enterprises, Dongguan prides itself on the industry's growth and economic impact on the area.
