DeCoro plans new China factory, High Point showroom

By Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, April 27, 2008

Leather upholstery maker DeCoro will open another factory in China next month and a new showroom here next year.

The 968,000-square-foot plant set to open in May joins DeCoro's 2 million-square-foot upholstery operation in Shenzhen, China. The new facility will produce exposed wood trim, with additional space set aside to expand leather upholstery operations by 40%.

The new plant replaces a 250,000-square-foot wood facility that will be closed. The old plant employs 350 people, and at full capacity, the new plant will employ 1,500, according to the company.

"Building construction is completed and we are installing equipment now," said Heath Corso, executive vice president of sales and marketing for DeCoro. "Our business in wood trim looks is especially strong now."

The new plant is not located inside an economic zone, meaning the merchandise made there can be sold on the domestic market in China, Corso said.

Meanwhile, DeCoro has purchased a four-story showroom building at 114 N. Main St. in High Point. It expects to occupy the 40,000-square-foot space, formerly used by Jonathan Louis International, in April 2009.

DeCoro currently shows in High Point in leased space at the International Home Furnishings Center, C-1103 and H-1147, which together total 38,000 square feet.
