Nominations open for Canadian awards

CHFA to bestow Retailer, Lifetime Achievement honors

Michel J. Knell -- Furniture Today, May 7, 2008

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — The Canadian Home Furnishings Alliance is accepting nominations for its Retailer of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement awards, which will be bestowed by January.

“We don’t do enough to celebrate excellence in our industry,” CHFA Chairman Laine Reynolds said. “This is one way we have as an association to show our appreciation for their contributions to our industry and their dedication to the industry.”

Retailer of the Year is presented to a retailer who has built a successful business and has made a difference in his or her community.

The 2008 Retailer of the Year Award went to the father and son team of Mel and Blayne Lastman, owners of Lastman’s Bad Boy. Prior honorees include Mega Group; Dennis Novosel, president and founder of Stoney Creek Furniture; Mark Dufresne, CEO of the Dufresne Group; Bill Comrie, retired chairman of the Brick Group; Bill Tepperman, chairman of Tepperman’s Furniture; and, Tom Leon, honorary chairman of Leon’s.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed on a Canadian furniture manufacturer, importer or industry supplier who is successful in business and has made significant contributions to the industry and his or her community.

This year’s recipients were John Collalilo, president and founder of Superstyle Furniture and Mario Collalilo, president and founder of Edgewood Furniture. Prior honorees include the late Orville Mead, president of Durham Furniture; Bruce MacPherson Sr., president of The Gibbard Furniture Shoppes of Napanee; Patrick S. Thody, president and CEO of Simmons Canada (retired); Serge Racine, retired chairman of Shermag Group; the Sklar Brothers, retired founders of Sklar Peppler Furniture; Guy Laflamme, chairman of South Shore Inds.; and Terry Clark, president of Acme Chrome Furniture.

Nominations for both awards should be submitted in writing to CHFA President Murray Vaughan before Aug. 1. The honorees will be selected by a committee of the CHFA’s board of directors. Nominations may be e-mailed to Vaughan at murray@chfaweb.ca.

A gala to honor the award winners will be held during the winter Canadian Home Furnishings Market, Jan. 10-13.
