Top product designers win this year's Pinnacles

HIGH POINT — Chin Hua by Zagaroli & Co., David Vanderbloemen and Scott Goodson for Century Furniture took the prize for major collections as winners of the Pinnacle Awards were announced at a High Point Market banquet here last night.

The 18th annual awards ceremony was hosted by Furniture/Today Editor-in-Chief Ray Allegrezza and Alexa Hampton, owner and president of design firm Mark Hampton.

Furniture/Today is a major underwriter of the annual Pinnacle Awards, which were created in 1995 by the American Society of Furniture Designers to promote design quality and recognize the talent of furniture industry designers.

Judges said the major collections winners "breathed new life into the Chin Hua collection for Century Furniture with ‘blow-you-away' finishes.... Imagine ‘You Think You Can Dance Hot Tamale Train!' There's an exceptional, wide range of materials utilized in the collection, including exotic woods in intricate detail and a full range of custom hardware."

"Create A Curio defies the rumored death of the curio in today's marketplace and takes the category to a top place. The creative use of the door fronts offers great versatility. Another interesting facet of this design is the ability to customize."

Youth furniture, Boardwalk by Richard Schroeder and Denis Kissane for Stanley Furniture

"Although Boardwalk wins in the youth furniture category, the judges noted that this design is versatile for both a kid's room, a guest room or second bedroom. Indeed, the judges felt that the collection features ‘grown-up styling.' And, with a choice of finish, the design has unisex appeal."

Casual dining, Skeletal by Mandy Shanahan for Phillips Collection

"The lightweight, airy design of Skeletal provides a fresh approach to casual dining. The creative use of mixed materials also adds special interest."

Formal dining, Cabinetmaker's Cherry by Robert Mulder for Harden Furniture

"The judges give their highest marks to the designer for his relaxed approach to formal dining in Cabinetmaker's Cherry. The collection is further enhanced by the rich beauty of the wood and the choice of a warm medium finish."

Motion upholstery, Levice III by Kelvin Ng for Kelvin Giormani by Planum

"The Levice III sectional steps up the look of today's motion furniture. The distinctive tufting detail adds a favorable impression. As the judges put it, ‘This design is not your daddy's recliner!'"

Stationary upholstery, Black Beauty by Christopher Sandomenico for Caracole

"A modern approach on classic Windsor styling is taken in the Black Beauty chair. The judges applaud the proper scale of the frame as well as the world-class combination of materials."

Leather upholstery, Miller Chair by Jessica Green for American Leather

"We're always talking about the crossover of fashion design into home furnishings, and the Miller Chair translates its belt-loop detail in high style. The sleek legs have a sexy allure, and the frame looks extremely comfortable. The judges praise American Leather's expansion of lighter scale frames."

Home lighting, Cavaletti by David Kitts, David Martin and Zach Pyle for Hubbardton Forge

"This design team has taken the hand-forged tradition of Hubbardton Forge to a new high point with Cavaletti. The sculptural, jewelry-like use of metal helps the fixture resemble a mobile, but notably with delicate detail. "

Home accessories, Zahra Collection by Satya Tiwari for Surya

"The judges salute the fact that area rugs have become a mandatory element in accessorizing homes today with the highest marks for the Zahra Collection for Surya. Another winning component of the product line is the outstanding use of color."

The judges say this "proves that good-looking products can be made with eco-friendly materials and techniques."

This year's Pinnacle award winners were the first to receive a new trophy commissioned by the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.
