L&P adds upholstered headboards to mix

AT THE MARKET — Leggett & Platt's Consumer Products Group is launching a line of domestically produced upholstered headboards here that aims to offer designer-friendly looks at affordable price points.

The company is offering five headboards that will retail from $299 to $349 for queen size models. Each is shown in a fabric that is unique to the bed.

Long known for metal beds sold under the Fashion Bed Group brand, Leggett has added wood beds and wood daybeds to its mix, and is taking another step with the upholstered headboards.

Officials say they believe the line will be well received, based partly on the positive response given to an earlier upholstered product, a Euro bed made with synthetic leather. That fully upholstered low-profile platform model, launched in 2009, retails around $799.

"We are driven by trends and there is a growing trend in this subcategory," said Herman Tam, vice president of marketing for the Consumer Products Group. "That is what prompted us to get involved. We feel like this is the right move to make and if the market is receptive, we will follow through with more.

"This is definitely a major attempt to get into a new subcategory," he added.

Tam said the line is produced at a factory in the Southeast, but would not be more specific. The headboards are expected to ship sometime late in the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter.

In addition to the upholstered headboards, the company is showing four new metal beds here that retail from $299 to $699.

The new products are on display at the company's showroom in World Market Center B-1326.
