Art Van to open World of Floors departments
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, May 24, 2011
WARREN, Mich. — Art Van Furniture will open Art Van World of Floors departments in all of its full-line showrooms beginning this June, expanding a store-within-a-store strategy that was kicked off last year with Paul's TV departments.
The flooring departments will average 2,000 square feet "and offer every kind of floor covering imaginable, including carpet, laminate, ceramic, wood and vinyl, as well as an extensive line of window treatments," the Top 100 company said in a release.
The first Art Van World of Floors will open in southeast Michigan in mid-June, with all stores completed by September.
World of Floors is part of Minneapolis-based Preferred Brands, billed as the third largest flooring buying group in the United States, selling and installing brands such as Shaw, Mohawk, Armstrong and Mannington for home and offices, according to the release. The company owns stores operated under the World of Floors and Floor to Ceiling banners.
Diane Charles, Art Van's director of corporate communications, wouldn't disclose the retailer's investment or projected sales under the business arrangement, but said World of Floors is leasing the space in the stores and that the deal involved revenue sharing.
World of Floors operates five stand-alone stores in Michigan with plans for more, and Charles said Art Van will be participating on a revenue-sharing basis in these, too. There may also be some real estate sharing between World of Floors and Art Van's PureSleep stand-alone bedding store format.
World of Floors' website shows one store each in California and Florida (dealer-owned) in addition to the corporate-owned Michigan locations.
In the release, founder and Chairman Art Van Elslander said his company is "all about quality product, value and exceptional customer service," and, "by bringing World of Floors into our showrooms, we can now offer an extra added convenience and design services to our guests."
The retailer expects traffic at its 33 full-line showrooms to increase with the addition and added that the move will create 100 jobs.
"Teaming Art Van's stellar reputation in the furniture industry with World of Floors' expertise in flooring and window treatments is a perfect match," said World of Floors President Emil Pedick in the release.
Pedick said the stores within the Art Van stores will be offering all the major brands of flooring–those named above "and many more." He added that World of Rugs will also be working on growing Art Van's area rug business.
