Exclusive research -- Year of ups and downs in bedding
Top 15 Bedding Producers 2008
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, July 10, 2008
HIGH POINT — It was a year of contrasts for major bedding producers. Four Top 15 producers managed to generate double-digit sales gains, while three had double-digit sales declines.
Overall, slightly more than half of the Top 15 saw their sales slip last year, according to Furniture/Today's latest bedding market share report. The rest of the field had gains ranging from a paltry 0.5% to a stellar 20.6%, helping boost the Top 15 as a whole into positive sales territory, with a 3.1% gain in wholesale shipments for 2007.
The industry's seven largest players all maintained their relative positions in the industry rankings, but two Top 10 players — Kingsdown and International Bedding — switched positions. Kingsdown rode the strength of a 12% sales gain to generate shipments estimated at $140 million, good enough to occupy the No. 8 position on the list. Meanwhile, former No. 8 player International Bedding saw its sales drop 21.9% and slipped down to the No. 10 position on the list.
Those are some of the highlights of Furniture/Today's latest bedding market share report. Each year the newspaper sifts through public records, audited sales reports and a comprehensive survey of bedding producers and suppliers to develop the market share report. Most of the figures in the report are estimates developed by Furniture/Today; most of the companies on the list are privately held and don't release audited figures.
