NEW YORK — ABC Carpet & Home has begun selling rugs digitally in its Modern Rug Gallery here.
The retailer has installed an interactive design station that enables the customer to select from thousands of rugs in the store and manipulate the color, texture, pile, size, and material. The custom work is viewed on a 36-inch plasma screen.
“The demand for bespoke rugs has grown tremendously in the past year,” said Alex Kimia, vice president of ABC Carpet. “This vehicle will enhance the shopping experience and enable the customer to have an integral role in the design process.”
With the design station, customers can choose from a spectrum of 600 silk and 600 wool tones to modify the color of the background and motif of the rug. The texture can be manipulated to be a traditional pile or loop pile, and a magnification option enables the user to view the surface up close.
To achieve a realistic perspective of the rug in a living space, the program allows it to be placed in seven room settings to assist in the final decision process. Suggested retail pricing for the custom rugs ranges from $30 to $175 per square foot.
