Simmons publishes "Green Guide" with Danny Seo

Provides consumers with eco-friendly design tips

David Perry -- Furniture Today, July 15, 2008

ATLANTA — Consumers who want to live a “greener” life at home would be well advised to start with their bedroom, says an advocate of the green lifestyle.

Danny Seo, whose green living messages have been aired in forums ranging from “Oprah” to books to DVDs, has collaborated with bedding major Simmons on the new “Green Guide to a Healthier Bedroom.” Its publication coincides with the launch of the new Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo mattress collection.

“If a consumer is looking to incorporate ‘green’ elements into a home, they really should start in the bedroom,” said Seo. “Bedding products like mattresses and sheets need to be replaced periodically, so selecting eco-friendly versions is an easy way to be more environmentally minded. A ‘green’ bedroom also may contribute to healthy sleep — after all, people spend one-third of their lives in bed, so why not make it as natural as possible?”

Simmons’ eco-friendly design tips for the bedroom include:

  • Mattress: Look for alternatives that contain fewer synthetic and petroleum-based components. Simmons says its Natural Care collection features latex foam made in part from biodegradable materials like rubber tree sap and a layer of base foam enhanced with soy.

  • Bed frame: Instead of buying a new headboard, buy a used one or an antique or give your old bed a new personality with a fresh coat of paint.

  • Pillow: Check out naturally derived latex options like the Natural Care pillow. It is hypoallergenic and inherently resistant to dust mites, mold and mildew, according to Simmons.

  • Sheets: Consider linens made from sustainable fabrics. Try organic cotton in spring, hemp in summer and organic flannel in winter.

  • Comforter: Use a comforter filled with cotton rather than feather down. Cotton is a more humane and environmentally friendly choice and is easily laundered in the washing machine, which helps to remove allergens.

Simmons officials said a green mattress is a good start on creating an eco-friendly bedroom.

“While a Natural Care mattress is a very important component of a ‘green’ bedroom, we know it is just the first step in the creation of an environmentally friendly sleep environment,” said Anne Kozel, Natural Care’s brand director. “We’re providing consumers with eco-bedroom decorating advice to show that helping the Earth is as simple as choosing sustainable options and that today’s ‘green’ products have all the style and comfort of traditional versions.”
