Hickory White to produce Lillian August line
By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, July 20, 2008
HICKORY, N.C. — Furniture maker Hickory White has signed on with Lillian August to produce the designer's line of eclectic English upholstery and case goods, with the first introductions set for the October market in High Point.
August's furniture line had been a mainstay at Drexel Heritage for years, but that licensing agreement recently expired. Her furniture portfolio began in 1993 with a line at Frederick Edward.
At Hickory White, the initial offering of new Lillian August products will include 15 upholstery pieces and 40 case goods items, according to Dan Weiss, CEO of Lillian August Designs. The collection also will include 40 existing upholstered pieces and 25 case goods designs that will be called the Lillian August Classics.
Chuck Autin, Hickory White's chief operating officer, said the collection's upholstery will be made domestically and the wood products will be manufactured in Vietnam.
“In the future we will be making that product customizable with finish options, contrasting tops and bases, two-tone striping and things like that,” he added. “That's what Hickory White has been doing for many years and we're doing quite well with that.”
The company offers standard, premium and artisan finishes for its wood products.
Hickory White, a division of Sherrill Furniture, will present the collection in a gallery setting on the third floor of its 309 N. Hamilton St. space. A party and other events also are planned.
In addition to furniture, August also has a range of other products that include decorative fabrics, area rugs, lighting, wall coverings, bed and bath, artwork and apparel, which have been ongoing since 1985.
“We are really pleased that we were selected to bring her vision to retail and the trade,” said Charles Coffey, vice president of corporate sales for Sherrill “The Lillian August brand is known for both product design and retail expertise, and Hickory White has long been recognized for the craft of the skilled artisans that make our furniture.”
August works with her son, Dan Weiss, who is CEO of Lillian August Designs. Weiss and another son, John, are the founders of the Lillian August Retail & Interior Design division with five showrooms in Connecticut, including a 70,000-square-foot flagship store in Norwalk, Conn.
