TUPELO, Miss. - Tupelo Furniture Market owner V.M. Cleveland has received a national Jefferson Award, honoring his public service and volunteer work, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported.
He is among 106 recipients of the awards, which are among the nation's highest honors for community service and volunteerism, the newspaper said. The awards were presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Among the charitable organizations that Cleveland supports are The Salvation Army and Sanctuary Hospice House, which he allows to use the furniture market and its resources for annual fundraisers free of charge, according to the Daily Journal.
Cleveland said he wasn't even aware he had been nominated for the award.
"There are hundreds of organizations that are worthy, and we do what we can, but we don't go out and publicize it," he told the newspaper. "Everybody knows I prefer staying behind the scenes and don't really want the recognition."
