Green rug sales up at Colonial Mills

Company was ahead of curve, says CEO

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 12, 2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Braided area rug and accessories manufacturer Colonial Mills says that sales of its “green” rug collections have doubled in the first five months of this year, compared with the last five months of 2007.

Donald Scarlata, president and CEO, said that the reason for the sales spike could be that CMI was “a little ahead of the ‘green’ curve and now the industry is more receptive to our offerings.”

“We made the first step towards going ‘green’ in 2006 with our bamboozle collection of braided-texture bamboo rugs,” said Scarlata. “And then followed that up with our earthtone line of 100% jute rugs in the summer of 2007.”

The bamboozle collection is the result of a licensing partnership with home decorator and designer Janelle Jarous Lampp. The rugs feature 100% bamboo yarn, which is double flat braided to create a thick, plush, textured softness that is also renewable.

The earthtone collection constructed from jute, a plant fiber. According to the company, the thread created from jute is strong, non-toxic, produces no residue, possesses antistatic characteristics and is biodegradable. The rugs feature a natural beige colorway and are suited for informal indoor applications and protected outdoor environments such as porches.
