NORFOLK, Va. — Sports licensed home décor maker Baseline Licensing Group launched a companywide effort last month to reduce paper waste and lower its carbon footprint.
Baseline is working to cut the paperwork that licensing agreements with professional and collegiate sports organizations require, said Jay Shurling, vice president of marketing and licensing.
Baseline has begun scanning its licensing agreements and storing them digitally, then recycling the old paper copies. The company has recycled about three tons of paper through this process.
For the past two years, the company also has emphasized digital faxing with customers.
“The furniture world still faxes quite a bit. We each have individual faxes that go directly to individuals. We never print that fax,” Shurling said.
He said the digital filing also makes it easier to track customer records, improving customer service.
In addition, Baseline is focusing on reducing the impact of projects that generate of paper waste, such as printing marketing materials. The company prints and distributes its catalogs in house, using a print-as-you-go system that cuts down on excess copies.
“Pre-printed marketing materials can generate a lot of paper waste. If you don’t keep an eye on what you’re doing you don’t really realize what you go through in a year,” said Shurling.
