Aims to tackle five specific business areas

Staff Staff -- Furniture Today, August 26, 2008

SOMERSET, N.J. - Upscale sofa, recliner and mattress maker Ekornes has issued a statement for consumers on its environmental goals.

The statement focuses on five areas: recycling; use of eco-friendly materials; water-based materials and manufacturing processes; air quality; and energy efficiency.

The company's parent company is based in Sykkylven, Norway.

The foam used in Ekornes’ products does not contain bromided or halogenated flame retardants, some of which have been banned in the company’s parent country of Norway.

"Over a long period, the company has implemented measures at its manufacturing plants to improve the internal and external environment, while also selecting more environment-friendly raw materials," the statement reads.

The statement in its entirety can be found at Ekornes' Web site.

Some of the current green strategies that the company employs include recycling waste from foam plastic production into new products or selling the material for carpet underlays and not using rainforest timber or endangered wood species.

"We are attacking all five areas of sustainable manufacturing processes and will continue to improve our environmental responsibility standards," said Peter Bjerregaard, president. "Our ongoing goal is for our products to have as little impact as possible on the environment."

Ekornes' products include Stressless recliners, sofas, loveseats and accessories; Ekornes Collection sofas; and Svane mattresses.
