Same-Store Sales Enjoy Small Rebound

With warm weather finally settling in across most of the country, boosting sales of apparel and seasonal merchandise, same-store retail sales remained modestly above plan during the second week of May, rising 3.3 percent, the Johnson Redbook Index reported.
Sales at the nation's big discounters rose 3.5 percent, the same as the week before; and department stores picked up slightly, with a 3 percent increase following a gain of 2.9 percent the preceding week.
For the two weeks month to date, overall same-store sales grew 3.3 percent, besting a target of 3 percent growth. Two-week sales at discounters rose 3.5 percent, slightly ahead of targeted growth of 3.4 percent. Department stores remained strong, with same-store sales of 2.9 percent easily topping a target of 2.4 percent.
“At mid-month, sales growth continued on to slightly above plan at most key retailers,” said Johnson Redbook Analyst Catlin Levis. “Some retailers said the pace of sales was uneven, slowing down in the middle of the week but picking up again and finishing firmer into the weekend.”
Sales of cosmetics, accessories and jewelry were above average, said Levis. “Warm weather has helped some discount stores move horticultural products, apparel and other seasonal items. Meanwhile, discount stores continue to do best in food and household goods.”
Breaking out sales results on a regional basis, Levis said, “On balance, the Southeast followed by the Northeast were the top performing regions.”
