NEW YORK - Sure Fit, a source and marketer of ready-made furniture covers, is on the hunt for the most hideous couch in America.Sure Fit is accepting entries for the 2008 Ugly Couch Contest through Sept. 30. The grand prize is a $5,000 living room makeover by designer Kim Myles, host of HGTV's "Myles of Style," and sponsored by Sure Fit. A judging panel will select 20 semi-finalists and then voting will go live at the company's Web site.
The semifinalists each will receive a Sure Fit slipcover, and the grand-prize winner will be announced Nov. 15.
The judges' criteria for selecting the semifinalists include: the ugliness of the overall design and fabric pattern; and the offensiveness of color, inappropriateness of fabric and inappropriateness of the combination of fabric, color and design as it relates to any period in the recent history of furniture. The uniqueness of the couch as it relates to these criteria will also be considered.
"Every year we look forward to sorting through the hundreds of hideous entries, searching for the ugliest of the ugly," said Laura Hilburt of Sure Fit. "But Sure Fit covers couches nationwide, and we can give even the ugliest couches a total transformation."
Submissions should include a good quality color photo of the coach. An online entry form is available at the Sure Fit Web site. Submissions also can be mailed to Sure Fit Inc., c/o "Ugly Couch Contest", 6575 Snowdrift Road, Allentown, PA 18106.
