Carpenter kicks off sleep tour

Zzzz Across America offers advice on snoozing

David Perry -- Furniture Today, September 2, 2008

RICHMOND, Va. - Coming soon to a city near you: Zzzz Across America.

That's the catchy name of Carpenter Co.'s national sleep tour, which kicked off recently at the company's headquarters here and makes stops at festivals and other events around the country into November. Cities on the tour include Chicago, Lincoln, Neb., Independence, Kan., and Dallas, among others.

Carpenter Co., a supplier of comfort cushioning products to the home furnishings industry, says it is sponsoring the tour to promote the importance of a good night's sleep. It provides practical sleep tips at each stop, and also on its new educational Web site, www.SleepBetter.org .

Carpenter Co. has launched a Web site at www.SleepBetter.org to tell people how to get a better night’s sleep.
Carpenter Co. has launched a Web site at www.SleepBetter.org to tell people how to get a better night’s sleep.

"SleepBetter.org is the go-to resource for fun and engaging science-based tools, tips and information to help anyone get better sleep," said Dan Schecter, vice president of Carpenter's consumer products division. "The site is one step in our journey to educate consumers about all they can do to sleep better - and ultimately enhance their quality of life."

The tour, which began Aug. 28 in Richmond, has scheduled stops in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Texas. It features a trailer that includes several stations designed to help people learn how to sleep better. They include:

* Zzzz Score stations, where visitors can obtain product recommendations for their personal sleep style.

  • The Pillow Microscope, which enables viewers to get an inside look at what's growing and living inside pillows.
  • The History of Sleep, where visitors can learn about the history of the pillow and examine the latest advances in pillow technology.
  • Reaction Test Stations, where visitors can participate in a game in which they "throw" a pillow at someone to test reaction time.
  • Mattress and pillow cross-section displays, where visitors can learn what makes a good mattress and pillow and how to find the right one for them.

The Web site also includes a Zzzz Score section. Consumers answer basic questions about their health and their sleep systems, and a personalized sleep prescription is provided to them. The advice includes this message: "Most mattresses are designed to last 10 years; however, some wear out as quickly as 5. If your mattress is 5 years or older, it's probably a good idea to flip it and/or purchase a mattress topper or pad to help achieve the support it offered when new."

The Web site also includes an archive of sleep-related articles and a catalog of more than 150 sleep tips. It also includes sleep advice from sleep expert Michael Breus, the author of "Beauty Sleep: Look Younger, Lose Weight, and Feel Great through Better Sleep."
