TACOMA, Wash. — Ikea has opened a 646,000-square-foot distribution center here, its seventh in North America. The Swedish home furnishings giant christened the center at a ceremony Wednesday that included Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire, local officials and Ikea representatives.
Constructed on 65 acres at the Frederickson Industrial Area in Washington's Pierce County, the complex is the first phase of a project that eventually could expand to more than 1 million square feet. Ultimately, it will employ about 125 people.
The center will allow the company to receive goods at ports in the region, manage inventory and distribute product to stores throughout North America, but mainly those in the Northwest, the Salt Lake City area and western Canada.
"We appreciate the support we have received from the community and are proud of the economic development and port business we are generating with the opening of this new facility," said Patrick Wedig, distribution center manager. "Our coworkers also are enthusiastic about the contribution we will be making to the Ikea goal of keeping our prices so low that the many people can afford them."
