HOUSTON - Gallery Furniture owner Jim McIngvale is now officially a Point of Light in honor of his philanthropy, the Houston Chronicle reports.

McIngvale, the Houston retailer known as "Mattress Mack," was honored as the 5,115th recipient of the Daily Point of Light Award. The award was presented by former President George H.W. Bush, his wife and their son Neal, who chairs the Points of Light foundation, which promotes volunteer activity.

The newspaper said the award cited accomplishments including funding the KickStart program, which encourages middle school students to achieve academically while avoiding gang affiliation, drug use and other negative behaviors, and co-founding the Peace of Mind Foundation, an organization aiding those with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
