Norman n. Tolkan, door store founder

Tolkan and his wife, the late Constance Tolkan, founded the Door Store in Georgetown in 1954. The store sold furniture and home furnishings in the D.C. region until the 1990s. At its peak, there were close to 75 stores in eight states. Tolkan closed the last Door Store in 1995.
After World War II, Tolkan spent time in Europe and the Middle East working for the State Department before returning home to launch the Door Store with his wife. He was a foreign service graduate of Georgetown University and spoke a number of languages, among them Italian and Arabic.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and a sister.
