Virginia Sterling acquires Canal Dover assets

Ohio plant will produce solid wood line

Tom Russell -- Furniture Today, September 26, 2008

CANFIELD, Ohio — Virginia Sterling Furniture, a solid wood bedroom resource, announced that it has completed an asset purchase of Canal Dover Furniture Co.

Canal Dover is a Midvale, Ohio-based manufacturer of upper middle priced solid wood dining rooms.

Through the asset purchase, Virginia Sterling has taken over production in Canal Dover's 75,000 square feet of manufacturing operations in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Virginia Sterling will produce its solid wood bedrooms and the Canal Dover product line in those facilities. The facility employs 65 and Virginia Sterling plans to add 30-50 workers in the next eight months.

Virginia Sterling had been seeking a manufacturer since its previous partner, Vaughan Furniture, began to wind down operations at its plant in Galax, Va., earlier this year.

Michael Scarsella, a co-owner of Virginia Sterling, which was launched in April 2007 as a division of Vaughan, said Canal Dover's reputation as a producer of high quality, solid wood product "made it the obvious choice, and of course we remain American-made."

Virginia Sterling also has hired Lloyd Love, a former vice president of manufacturing at Durham Furniture, to oversee the plant operation in Ohio. Virginia Sterling's corporate office will remain in Canfield, an hour from the plant.

"Lloyd's more than 40 years of experience in solid wood will prove invaluable for our success," Scarsella added in his statement.

Officials said that production will start immediately and that products will be on display in the company's showroom this October market in space 204 of Market Square.
