EEOC sues Stanley Furniture
Claims ‘racially hostile' environment
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, September 26, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has accused Stanley Furniture of allowing a "racially hostile work environment" at its Lexington, N.C., factory. In a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court here, the EEOC said employee Johnny Wright, who is black, was subjected to repeated racial slurs and other derogatory comments by a white co-worker.
The complaint says Stanley knew about the incidents but did nothing to stop them.
The incidents took place between 2004 and Aug. 29, 2006, the suit said. According to the complaint, other black employees at the factory also were subjected to similar slurs and derogatory comments by the same white co-worker.
The EEOC is seeking unspecified punitive damages for Wright and the other unnamed African-American employees.
