Tempur Sealy sets 10-year mattress warranties

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Tempur Sealy International plans to standardize its full-replacement warranties on premium bedding lines at 10 years, a top company official told Furniture/Today.
Rick Anderson, executive vice president and president, North America, for Tempur Sealy International, said the new warranty program, which goes into effect March 1, is designed to build trust in the company's brands and reduce consumer confusion.
With the change, Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, Sealy Optimum and Sealy Posturepedic models will all have 10-year full-replacement warranties, and the pro-rated portion of those warranties, which extend some of the total warranty lengths to 25 years, will be eliminated, Anderson said.
"The goal of this initiative is to reduce consumer confusion while increasing satisfaction with our brands and products," he said in a letter to dealers this week. "Our intention is to build trust with our consumers and retailers through a simple, complete and honest warranty solution. It is a promise we make to our consumers, and one we believe will resonate with them when it is time to make their next bedding purchase."
Additionally, some retailers believe the long warranties suppress mattress sales, he said.
The executive said retailers will be allowed to sell extended warranties on Tempur Sealy products, if they wish, in the second quarter of this year.
"We expect this to be received favorably within the retailer community," Anderson said.
Recent mattress research indicates that consumers find warranties in the mattress industry, which often include a full-replacement portion covering 10 years and a pro-rated portion covering 15 years, to be "confusing and often misleading," he said. "This research is echoed by feedback we received directly from our consumers, so we are taking action to bring about a new standard of trust within our portfolio of leading brands."
The company said that beginning March 1, it will increase the warranty on all Tempur-Pedic mattress covers from two years to 10 years, and will standardize at 10 years the full-replacement portion of warranties on premium lines.
Warranties on mattresses that currently have less than 10-year coverage will remain unchanged. And adjustable foundation warranties will also remain unchanged. Warranties on any Tempur Sealy product purchased prior to March 1 of this year are not impacted by the change, the company said.
Anderson said Tempur Sealy officials "will closely monitor and evaluate the program to ensure its effectiveness." He added: "Tempur Sealy retains the right to change this policy in the future as needed."
