BOSTON — Online home furnishings retailer Wayfair.com has promoted James Savarese to chief operating officer, a new position for the company.

Savarese, previously senior vice president of operations, manages Wayfair's key operations worldwide and oversees sales, customer service, supply chain, merchandise operations and third-party partner programs. He continues to report to Wayfair CEO and co-founder Niraj Shah.

"James has been instrumental in building Wayfair's world class operations from the ground up," Shah said in a release. "As COO, he will provide the operational vision and leadership to ensure that we remain at the forefront of our industry in delivering an exceptional ecommerce experience."

Savarese, in his previous position, is credited with transforming Wayfair's customer care organization and building its vendor direct supply chain.

Before joining Boston-based Wayfair in 2008, he spent seven years at Arrowstream, a supply chain services and software company, and worked as a consultant in Deloitte's London and Boston offices.
