John Derian designs line for Cisco Bros.

Will debut at CA Boom East in High Point

Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, October 7, 2008

HIGH POINT - Artisan and decoupage specialist John Derian has teamed with West Coast upholstery producer Cisco Bros. for a short new line of upholstered and slipcovered furniture.

The offering consists of five pieces in the classic Cisco style. They're debuting at CA Boom East, a new show premiering here at Mill Village, just south of the downtown area at 1014 Mill Ave.

Derian is known for decoupage designs hand-made in his studio in New York, where he employs a small staff of artists. He recently launched an exclusive stationery and home décor line for Target and also sells his products in upscale home stores, catalogs and gift shops worldwide.

The first collection from Derian includes the Cove sofa, the Geranium sofa, the Dromedary loveseat, the Fritillaria chair and the Field bench. The styling is based on 17th century French pieces and mid-century designs. Retail prices range from $1,950 to $5,100.

The line will be offered in upholstered or slipcovered, except for the tufted bench, which only comes upholstered. Only two colors - oyster, a soft white, and flax, an ecru - are offered in a linen made by a Belgian company that has been making linen since the 1850s.

Cisco and Derian are collaborating on new pieces for the line.

Like the rest of the Cisco line, the new upholstery uses eco-friendly sustainable materials.

"Over the last 14 years of having my shop I have seen a real need for comfortable, good-looking upholstered furniture," Derian said. "I have had many great antique and vintage pieces come and go and I thought it was time to pull together some of my favorite pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries and share them with a wider audience."

The Derian products - both furniture and accessories - will be cross-merchandised in stores that already carry the artisan's line, including Jayson Home and Garden in Chicago, Paris Market in Savannah, Ga., and Lillian August in Connecticut. The company said that not all stores carrying the furniture line will already have other Derian accessories.
