MINNEAPOLIS — Cushion maker Carpenter Co. has introduced the Renew brand of foam cushioning made with Cargill's soy-based BiOH.BiOH polyols are derived from vegetable oils such as soybean oil, and the technology is being used by flexible polyurethane foam manufacturers in bedding, furniture and automobiles.
A Cargill press release said that the Renew foam is being purchased by furniture producers such as La-Z-Boy as well as bedding manufacturers.
"This is a major milestone in a journey that started for us as a research project only four years ago and is quickly expanding to global manufacturing and distribution," said Yusuf Wazirzada, business unit leader of Cargill Bio-based Polyurethanes.
Cargill has announced two significant investments over the last 18 months in BiOH poloyols.
Last year, the company opened a $5.5 million polyols research and development facility. More recently, it announced that it is scaling up its manufacturing capabilities with construction of a $22 million BiOH poloyol plant in Chicago.
The new production facility, which is expected to be fully operational in November, is the first world-scale bio-based polyols plant.
