El Paso retailer Charlotte's to pay fine to feds
Case involves manipulating financial records
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, May 10, 2010
EL PASO, Texas — Home furnishings retailer Charlotte's here has pleaded guilty to manipulation of financial records and will pay a $250,000 fine, according to a report by the El Paso Times.
The business, led by Melissa O'Rourke, took cash from an unidentified customer - a series of payments totaling $630,745 - and then altered its records so the transactions weren't reported to the IRS, according to a plea agreement between the business and the federal government.
The federal charge was brought against the business, not O'Rourke.
Charlotte's was listed among retailers on Furniture/Today's latest Beyond the Top 100 report with 2008 sales estimated between $5 million and $9.9 million.
