Serta recalls mattresses over flammability
Certain covered foam models don't meet new standards

WASHINGTON — Bedding major Serta International has voluntarily recalled about 6,100 polyurethane foam mattresses that don't meet new federal flammability standards that went into effect last year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The mattresses, produced between Nov. 30, 2007, and May 20, 2008, have a zipper cover over the foam core.
The CPSC said consumers should immediately contact Serta at (866) 675-3853 to determine if their mattress is included in the recall. Affected consumers will receive a free replacement mattress cover.
According to the agency, the recall involves 16 models and only certain serial numbers within each model.
Serta spokesman Kelly Rampson said the problem was discovered during routine quality testing by the company. The company then notified the CPSC and began working with the agency on the recall, she said.
Serta and the CPSC said the mattresses didn't meet flammability standards that went into effect July 1, 2007, that require mattresses to be resistant to open-flame ignition.
No injuries or consumer complaints were reported.
