ISPA promotes sustainable practices

New section on Web site offers information

David Perry -- Furniture Today, November 5, 2008

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The International Sleep Products Assn. continues to expand its commitment to sustainable business practices.

The industry's trade association has added a sustainability section to its Web site at www.sleepproducts.org. It features information on recycling used mattress components, green marketing rules in foreign markets, green chemistry, the industry's sustainability initiative, and a design competition focused on mattress recycling.

"We've created the new sustainability section to not only keep our members abreast of green developments that affect our industry, but to give ISPA members tools that they can use to learn more about how to improve the environmental performance of their businesses and their products," said Ryan Trainer, ISPA vice president and general counsel. "Members can use this site to locate used mattress component recycling facilities that may be operating near them, find outlets for recycled materials they want to sell, and learn more about ISPA's efforts to improve the recycling of used mattress components."

ISPA says that mattress producers and their suppliers are taking environmentally sound and economically practical actions to improve the long-term sustainability of the industry. That begins with the materials sourcing process and continues through manufacturing, assembly, distribution and used product disposal.

"It is rewarding to know that ISPA is helping to facilitate actions that will protect the long-term outlook of our planet for our children and future generations," said Dick Doyle, ISPA's CEO and president. "Knowledge leads to action, and by making information readily available to the industry through this new section of our Web site, hopefully more companies will pursue sustainable product offerings and practices."
