Solafina to offer luxury, eco-friendly fabrics

New source will debut at Showtime

Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, November 11, 2008

HICKORY, N.C. — Capitalizing on two popular trends — luxury fabrics and eco-friendly green products — Steve Bowman has created Solafina, an eco-boutique fabric line.

The collection of domestically produced, ecologically friendly upscale fabrics will debut at Showtime in High Point Dec. 7-10. The line features organic fibers including cotton, hemp and linen.

"Solafina was developed in response to the growing trend among consumers who are keenly aware of earth-friendly and environmentally responsible options when purchasing goods and services," said President Steve Bowman, a longtime fabric supplier with S. Bowman Textile Resources.

Solafina, which takes its name from the sun, will introduce four collections:

• Simply Cotton, organic cotton constructions.

• Hearthside, incorporating natural, sustainable fibers.

• Symmetry, chenille-rich yarns made from natural components.

• Eclectics, a mix of textures and fresh natural colors.

Produced and stocked domestically, Solafina will offer open line as well as custom fabrics. "We will produce exclusives as well as a ‘weave-to-order' custom line with minimum production quantities," said Bowman.

Solafina will also be a resource for OEM manufacturers seeking decorative woven upholstery fabrics made from sustainable resource natural fibers or recycled post-consumer and post-industrial raw materials.

"All of our fabrics and most components are produced by certified manufacturers located within about 100-mile radius of our distribution point here," Bowman said. The nearby production minimizes the company's carbon footprint, he said.

Solafina will share showroom space with Dicey Fabrics, an authorized Solafina manufacturer, in Market Square Textile Tower, ninth floor.
