HELSINKI, Finland — Visitors to Habitare, Finland’s furniture and design fair, will see sofas hanging from the ceiling during the September market.

Habitare fair themeThe theme of Habitare, a furniture and design fair in Finland, will be Breaking Free and will include furniture suspended from the ceiling. The designers called this display a “surreal fantasy, blue skies, clouds and a nice spoonful of Mary Poppins.”

Kaisa Berry and Timo Berry, from the Both design agency, are designing the Ahead arena at the fair around the Breaking Free concept using “architecture, spatial design and visual identity,” according to officials.

New Finnish furniture introductions and designs will be presented at Habitare, held concurrently with Antiikki, an antiques, art and vintage items exhibition and ArtHelsinki, a contemporary art fair. The Ahead installation will feature white umbrellas and swings suspended from the ceiling and furniture “floating in the air,” Kaisa Berry said, and will also showcase Habitare’s Far Ahead exhibition featuring material and design innovations.

“The aim is to approach the often over-serious design scene by using art, stage design and a bit of kitsch,” she said. “We also offer adults an opportunity to play a little. There may well be other airborne surprises in store.”

Habitare will be held at Messukeskus, Expo and Convention Centre Helsinki, from Sept. 9 - 13. Habitare is open to professionals on Sept. 9 and to the public Sept.10- 13. The fair is online at www.habitare.fi.

Cindy HodnettCindy W. Hodnett | Upholstery/Style Editor

As the Upholstery/Style Editor for Furniture/Today, I spend my work hours studying the sloping curves of sofa frames, the intricacies of fabric and the nail head trim and button accents that function as jewelry on a piece of upholstery. I research the companies that bring these things together for retailers, and ultimately consumers, and interview industry leaders about their business strategies and where they think furniture is heading in the future. And when traveling, I provide a sneak peek at what I'm seeing, whether at international markets or in High Point or Las Vegas.

I look forward to sharing what I see and I hope you'll feel free to do the same. Email me at chodnett@furnituretoday.com or follow me on Twitter @CynthiaWHodnett.
