The mattress, made by Serta, was the product of an agreement between the cable TV channel and BrandSource in the United States.
"It was an opportunity to make a truly North American program and we were the beneficiaries of that agreement," said Mike Vancura, Mega executive vice president of retail operations.
The mattress uses 95% recycled steel for the springs, and soy-based foam and natural fibres for the covers. Wood components are from sustainable forests. While the set isn't 100% green, Vancura said, "It's a big step ahead of what's currently available in the average bed out there."
Serta is producing the mattresses in its plants on both sides of the border. Units sold in Canada will be made at plants in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver.
The collection features six models priced from C$899 to C$1,199.
"The product is already shipping with terrific repeats," Vancura said, adding that it is currently on 75 retail floors in Canada.
The collection is only available to Mega members that sign onto the BrandSource program, which includes all members of the Countrywide and Multi-Meubles banners.
Upcoming promotions for the collection will include advertising on the HGTV channel and its companion website. The line also will be featured on the Mike Holmes website as well as in Canadian Living magazine, and in the June and September flyers published for Countrywide. Ads also will run on the CTV and Global television networks this fall.
