LAS VEGAS — The mattress industry enters the bedding-rich market here with some wind in its sails, with bedding unit sales up in double digits for the first half of the year, according to the latest sales report from the International Sleep Products Assn.
ISPA, showing here at World Market Center B-910, said bedding unit sales in June were up 12.6% from the same month last year and the dollar value was up 13%. For the first six months of the year, units were up 11.3% and dollars were up 10.7%.
ISPA is sharing that good news with members who stop by its Oasis Lounge at B-910, where it is serving beverages and light refreshments to members.
ISPA also presented a breakdown of innerspring and specialty sleep mattress sales.
For the first half of the year, specialty mattress unit sales were up 35.2% from the comparable 2009 period, compared with an 11.2% gain for innerspring mattress units. The dollar value of specialty mattresses was up 33.9% in the first half, while the dollar value of innerspring mattresses was up 4.9%.
Those figures represent the performance of 20 bedding producers that account for a majority of the bedding dollars and units generated by the industry, according to ISPA. Those producers account for about 64% of total units and 73% of the wholesale revenues.
About the only bad news in the latest ISPA report is that the average unit price in the first six months dropped by 0.5%. The average unit price of innerspring mattresses dropped by 5.6% in the first half, to $229.85, while it dropped by 0.9% in that same period for specialty mattresses to $767.09.
