Ethan Allen to hire 90 at North Carolina plant

Company plans to expand its case goods production

Heath E Combs -- Furniture Today, August 5, 2010

OLD FORT, N.C. — Ethan Allen plans to immediately expand operations at its solid wood case goods plant here and create 90 jobs.

The company plans to invest $250,000 to expand its production capacity. The plant produces dining and bedrooms sets.

Ethan Allen manufactures upholstery furniture in Maiden, N.C. and has about 1,300 employees in North Carolina.

Ethan Allen has been operating in Old Fort since 1959 and will start the case goods expansion immediately, a press release said.

The project was made possible in part by a $270,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund, a nonrecurring appropriations made by the N.C. General Assembly which helps the state recruit and expand jobs.

"In addition to bringing jobs and investment to Western North Carolina, Ethan Allen's decision to expand in McDowell County speaks volumes about our strong work force and business climate," said Gov. Bev Perdue, in a press release.

The release said Ethan Allen makes about 70% of its products in seven North American plants. Individual jobs at the Old Fort plant pay an average wage of $26,645 not including benefits, the release said, adding that in McDowell County average annual wage is $27,768.

"Our plan to expand case goods operations in Old Fort, North Carolina, where we have been operating since 1959, will start immediately. We are pleased that the state and local government authorities in North Carolina worked with us to make this happen," said Ethan Allen Chairman and CEO Farooq Kathwari, in the release.
