Driver sentenced to 14 to 17 months in David Sherman death

Sealy vice president was riding bicycle when struck

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 25, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A woman who pleaded guilty to several charges in the 2009 death of David Sherman, a Sealy vice president who was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle, has been sentenced to 14 to 17 months in prison.

The Greensboro, N.C., News & Record reported that the woman, Grayson Warren Dawson, pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run causing a death, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and having no operator's license. She could have received a maximum sentence of 20 months.

Sherman, an avid bicyclist, was riding along a local highway on a Saturday afternoon last fall when a Dodge Durango driven by Dawson crossed the center line and struck him head-on. She left the scene and was charged days later, after employees at a convenience store noticed the damage to her vehicle and reported it to authorities.

Sherman, 55, had worked at Sealy for 11 years and was the bedding major's vice president of tax and internal audit.

About 60 of his friends and family attended the sentencing hearing to show their support, the News & Record reported.
