Natura’s Sharper Image line has innovative technology

David Perry -- Furniture Today, August 26, 2010

The Sharper Image Personal Touch line, retailing from $2,499 to $4,999, has a vacuum system that extracts air from the polyurethane foam in the mattress, changing the density and support characteristics of the foam. As the foam becomes denser, it provides more conforming characteristics, the company said.
Company officials said there is no other sleep system like it on the market. The Comfort Control Unit is produced by Novalay, a Florida-based technology company led by CEO Gino Giori.
The Personal Touch bed bears The Sharper Image brand name that Natura acquired a license for last year. The bed will not carry the Natura brand name. This is the first time Natura has used the Sharper Image brand.
Ralph Rossdeutscher, president of Natura, said the bed was a big hit in Natura's new and larger World Market Center showroom here.
"The reaction was phenomenal," he said. "This is the only product we've introduced in 16 years of selling mattresses that the large retailers made a decision to take it in 20 minutes."
Distribution of the Personal Touch sleep set will be limited, Rossdeutscher said. Natura showed the bed to select retailers in a separate room adjacent to its main showroom.
The adjustable polyurethane chambers in the sleep set are connected by hoses to the vacuum system. As air is removed and the bed changes its support characteristics, an audio system explains the nature of the changes. The pressure-sensing controls note when "optimal support is found." As the air is removed from the foam, it takes on characteristics of memory foam, the company said.
Natura is positioning the sleep set as offering a "body intelligent support matrix."
