Craftmaster implements AHFA's environmental management system

Plants see reduction in energy, water consumption

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, September 7, 2010

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. — Upholstery maker Craftmaster Furniture's plants here have implemented the American Home Furnishings Alliance's environmental management system.

The Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture program, or EFEC, is a voluntary program created for residential furniture companies by the AHFA.

The program focuses on improving resource and raw material management, reducing energy and water consumption, reducing waste costs and increasing recycling efforts, among other items.

The Taylorsville EFEC team was led by Kevin Mann, vice president of operations.

Since initiating the program in August 2009, the Taylorsville operation reduced its energy consumption by about 10%, which is expected to reduce annual energy expenses by $25,000 annually, an AHFA press release said.

The EFEC program prompted construction of a dock at one plant to help bail and load materials for recycling. That has helped reduce landfill waste by more than 50%.

Reduction in waste costs is expected to produce a further annual savings of $40,000 in removal fees. Also, the company has also gone from eight trash dumpsters at the facilities to one and is recycling or selling most of its discarded trash.

"I am very proud of the seven-person team we put in place at Craftmaster over eleven months ago to start this process. Kevin has done a great job coordinating and executing the stringent requirements needed to attain the EFEC registration," said Craftmaster President and CEO Roy Calcagne.

Craftmaster officials said the company plans to further reduce air emissions from its finishing department by 30% as a result of upgrades to equipment and chemicals it uses.

Craftmaster, owned by Samson Holdings, has been taking steps to reduce its environmental footprint. The company uses Earthcare Inside sustainable materials in its products from Hickory Springs.

The AHFA also noted in its release that Franklin Furniture is expected to complete the EFEC program this fall in 1.1 million square feet of manufacturing space in three plants and its corporate headquarters.
