Golf Atlanta to raise money for pancreatic cancer research
Seena Magowitz Foundation among hosts for Oct. 15 event

ATLANTA — The Seena Magowitz Foundation is among the hosts for the first Golf Atlanta charity golf tournament here to benefit globalCure, a new initiative aimed at finding better treatments for pancreatic cancer.
The event is set for Oct. 15 at the Crabapple Golf Club in Alpharetta, Ga. It begins at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, followed by golf and an awards luncheon featuring a raffle and a live auction. Pancreatic cancer advocate Jai Pausch will speak at a private dinner the night before the golf tournament.
Atlanta businessman Howard Young, who chairs the TGen Foundation's National Pancreatic Cancer Committee and is a pancreatic cancer survivor, also is hosting the event, as are businessmen John Morley and Tom Vitale.
Proceeds will support globalCure, an initiative of TGen, a nonprofit research facility in Phoenix that is working to find new ways to prevent, treat and cure pancreatic cancer, officials said.
"This first 2010 Golf Atlanta benefiting globalCure is happening because of the organizing and networking done by Atlanta businessman Howard Young," said Roger Magowitz, chairman of the Seena Magowitz Foundation and president of Virginia Beach, Va.-based Mattress Discounters. "A lot of people in the Atlanta area are cheering Howard on in his fight against this terrible disease. Hopefully we'll be able to do more events like this across the nation to benefit globalCure."
The Golf Atlanta event expects to draw 100 players on 25 teams.
Roger Magowitz established the Seena Magowitz Foundation to honor his mother, Seena, who died of pancreatic cancer. The eighth annual Seena Magowitz Celebrity Golf Classic is set for Dec. 4 at the Talking Stick Resort near Scottsdale, Ariz.
That event has raised millions of dollars for pancreatic cancer research. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the country. More than 90% of the 37,000 people in the U.S. diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year die from the disease.
