MANCHESTER, Conn. - Bob's Discount Furniture Charitable Foundation, along with partner Planned Furniture Promotions, raised more than $250,000 during its annual golf tournament and dinner held in August.
The year's tournament, held at the Tunxis Plantation Country Club, drew 214 golfers, including Brandon Beck of Planned Furniture Promotions, who made the first hole in one in the tournament's 23-year history.
Later, about 350 people attended a gala dinner at the Farmington Club, which featured a silent and live auction and awards ceremony. Attendees heard from a young girl who attends the American Cancer Society's Camp Rising Sun, a camp for children with cancer and a beneficiary of this year's outing. She told how the donations have affected her life, and those of other kids who couldn't attend camp without financial assistance.
Other organizations helped by this year's fundraiser are Family & Children's Aid, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Jimmy Fun and the American Red Cross.
Bob Kaufman, president of Bob's Discount Furniture, said the furniture industry is continuing to give despite the economy.
"We all know that business conditions are tough for many in the industry this summer, but the number of colleagues and companies that stepped up to contribute to the annual event was truly incredible," he said.
