NEW YORK — Jeff Katz, general manager of six-unit New York retailer The Fulton Stores, will be this year's recipient of the Jerry Gans Memorial Award, the Greater New York Home Furnishings Assn. has announced.
Katz will be presented with the award at a formal dinner and dance that for the first time this year will be jointly held by members of the GNYHFA and the Metropolitan Furnishings Assn. It will take place Dec. 4 at The Landmark in East Rutherford, N.J.
Katz will share the spotlight at the event with two people to be honored by the Metropolitan Furnishings Assn. Eric Bernstein of Berkshire Furniture, Union, N.J., will receive the Howard Liveright Award and Chris Clarizio, a furniture representative known for his work with the Dean Michael Clarizio Cancer Foundation, will be named a Dean of IHFRA, the International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn.
The Jerry Gans Memorial Award honors prominent members of the furniture industry for distinguished service.
Fulton Stores operates in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens, New York. Katz, a grandson of company founder Harry Gordon, oversees merchandising and buying for the chain and manages its accounts receivables portfolio.
GNYHFA officials said Katz also was instrumental in the association's efforts to head off retail licensing legislation in New York that would have forced stores to post large bonds with the city.
"We are so pleased that Jeff will be accepting the Gans award this year," said Andy Gans, for whose father the award is named. "He is widely respected in the home furnishings community, not only for his ability to run a profitable family business through these tough times, but also for being a good friend to his suppliers and a role model to his employees. His leadership is reflected in the way Fulton Stores is perceived in the industry and by its customers."
A commemorative journal will be prepared so friends, family and associates can honor Katz, Bernstein and Clarizio with a message.
"This event will be a fantastic holiday season party for New York and New Jersey retailers, reps, manufacturers and suppliers," said Chris De Lisa, president of GNYHFA.
