Groovystuff to introduce Dick Idol furnishings
Also will sponsor student design competition for Idol product

WHITEFISH, Mont. — Reclaimed teakwood manufacturer Groovystuff will introduce a licensed collection with Montana artist and outdoor lifestyle Dick Idol at the spring High Point Market.
The collection will include accent furniture, accessories, wall décor, and coordinated lighting.
"Our company continues to grow, and we believe our partnership with Dick Idol will help us expand our product line and customer base," said Chris Bruning, Groovystuff founder and vice president, in a press release.
The new line will have Groovystuff's signature rustic and vintage look.
"I believe that distinctive accents are a key design element in any room in the home and am confident that Groovystuff will provide our customers with great complementary designs," Idol said in a press release.
Also this fall, in an effort to draw the talents of young designers, Groovystuff will partner with Appalachian State University in a design competition.
Twenty-three students in ASU's Industrial Design and Furniture Design programs led by Professor Richard Prisco will participate in the competition by designing a piece of modern rustic furniture for the Groovystuff's new licensed Idol collection.
"We need to embrace these talented young students and encourage them to seek a career in the home furnishings industry," said Bruning. "If we are going to appeal to Gen X and Gen Y consumers, we need designers with a fresh, young perspective."
The students will have to work with reclaimed teak and other components used by Groovystuff to design an environmentally friendly product that reflects the Idol style brand and can be produced by sustainable manufacturing.
The students will present their inspirations, renderings and CAD drawings to Groovystuff and a panel of judges on Oct. 8. Their work will be on display at the Suites at Market Square at the upcoming High Point Market, which opens Oct. 16.
A ballot box will accompany each display so retail buyers can vote on the designs and offer comments throughout the market.
The top five designs will be selected by a panel of judges and a popular vote from retailers. Finalists' prototypes will be presented at the spring High Point Market, the 10th anniversary of the Dick Idol brand.
The winning design will be the one with the top sales. The student designer will win a $1,000 cash prize and a 1% royalty on all future sales.
The Idol brand has licenses in furniture and bedding with Shadow Mountain, lighting and accessories from Pacific Coast Lighting, area rugs from Surya and wall art/décor from StyleCraft, among others.
