Emerging talent in the spotlight at Décor + Design Year’s challenge

MELBOURNE, Australia —The Vivid 2016 Winners were recently announced at the Vivid Awards Ceremony at Decor + Design in Melbourne.

Vivid is a design competition that identifies the next generation of design talent. Five awards were presented including the Furniture Award, Furniture Concept Award, Lighting Award, Lighting Concept Awards and Vivid Colour Awards. Winners receive prize money and exposure to different aspects of the design industry.

Bryan Cush received the Furniture Award for Pinch Noir, a timber bench that seats ups to three people and can be used as an entry hallway bench of coffee table. Judges noted that the piece has “great potential for multiple uses in residential, commercial and hospitality interiors.”

Alexsandra Pontonio was named as the winner of the Furniture Concept Award for Ondale, a shelf unit with a modern aesthetic crafted by traditional joinery and cold-pressed lamination. Judges lauded Pontonio’s “considered use of materials and fabrication technologies that challenged conventional thinking.”

Daniel Treacy is the Lighting Award winner for Pylite, a modular lighting element that can be scaled for individual or feature installation settings. About Pylite, judges noted that it can “expand and adapt to its environment as an art piece, illuminated screen or wall sconce.”

Treacy also won the Vivid Colour Award for Pylite with the judges noting that the color choice for the piece “added clarity to the form and enhanced the aesthetic.”

The Lighting Concept Award was presented to Adam Markowitz for the Assegai Pendant, a sleek timber pendant task lighting design with brass details. The originality of the craftsmanship was cited by the judges as a determining factor, along with the attention to design details.

Vivid 2016 featured more than 50 finalists, with a the judging panel that included: Ross Didier, Didier; Emilia La Forgia, Artemide Lighting; Orest Hawryluk, James Richardson; Rachel Oakley, Dulux; Michelle Pataki Hyams, Schiavello Group; Jo Mawhinney, Living Edge; Bree Leech, Texture; Jan Henderson, Niche Media; Emma Telfer, Office For Good Design; Dana Tomic Hughes, Yellowtrace; Ann-Maree Sargeant, The Snap Collective; Pascale Gomez McNabb, Pascale Gomez McNabb; Filip Bjazevic, Latitude Group; Kirrilly Wilson, Regulating Lines Pty Ltd and Keti Lytras, GlobeWest. Décor + Design was curated by Daniel Della Riva of Latitude Group.
