MONSON, Maine — After several last-minute reprieves, it appears case goods manufacturer Moosehead Mfg. is closing for good.In September, Louise M. Jonaitis, owner of the Grand State O'Maine Land Co., bought the company at a public auction and said she expected the plant to reopen in three to six months.
A story in the Bangor Daily News this weekend said that after finding out about environmental concerns with the plant. Jonaitis negotiated with Moosehead's mortgage lender, Machias Savings Bank, for its inventory.
The paper reported this weekend that furniture-making machines, parts, wooden pieces, tools and vehicles were sold from the plant and that Jonaitis now plans to lease the facility.
Jonaitis was the third owner and operator of Moosehead in recent years. After family members announced plans to close in early 2007, they sold the company to Tardy-Connors LLC, a Maine investor group.
The investors struggled to find working capital and shut down last fall.
Moosehead's mortgage holder, Machias Savings Bank, had scheduled an auction in January to liquidate its assets, but at the last minute, Tardy-Connors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to try to find a buyer.
Unable to do so, the company reverted back to Machias and then to Jonaitis in the public auction this fall.
Brothers Tolford and John Durham started the business in 1947 and passed it down through two generations.
